《暫時的安慰》

自從南高峰上那夜以後,.
五個月不曾經驗這樣神秘的境界了。
月光​​浸沒著孤寂的我,
轉溫潤了我的孤寂的心,
涼透了的肌骨都震動了;
翠微山上無數森嚴的黑影。
方才還像猙獰的鬼兵,
此時都好像和善可親了。
山前,直望到長辛店的一線電燈光,
天邊,直望到那微茫的小星。
一切都受了那靜穆的光明的洗禮,
一切都是和平的美,
一切都是慈祥的愛。
山寺的晚鐘,
秘魔崖的狗叫,
驚醒了我暫時的迷夢。
是的,暫時的!
亭子面前,花房的草門掀動了,
一個花匠的頭伸出來,
四面一望,又縮進去了。——
靜穆的月光,究竟比不上草門裡的爐火!
暫時的安慰,也究竟解不了明日的煩悶呵!

胡適自跋:
英國詩人 Browning 影響我不少。但他的盲目的樂觀主義,---如他的Pippa Passes ------毫不能影響到我。此詩前半幾乎近似他了,然而只能一瞥的心境,不能長久存在。我不是悲觀者。但我的樂觀主義和他不相同。
