胡適《華嚴經‧ 回向(品)》Parinamana..."Rain or hail, come what may! What they can endure I can also!"):送與泰戈爾 Rabindranath Tagore ;Stephen Northrup Hay的博士論文Tagore's Trip to China in 1924. Asian Ideas of East and West By Stephen Northrup Hay : Tagore and His Critics in Japan, China, and India. A Nobel Tradition: Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore in China.

(I was in a train from Tsinan bound for Peiping on October 1922 when the Parinamana chapter in the Sutra of Hua Yen inspired me into writing this poem.)
Through the oppressive storms has he come,
And already attained the summit of the mountains
Where peace and beauty comfort him,
And the stormy rains threaten him no more.
He turns his head towards the valley below,
And remembers the comrades he has left behind
In that dismal valley shrouded by thick clouds
To endure the gloom of the storms.
He cannot bear the thought of parting with them;
But he is weary of the winds and the rain. "There may be hailstorms; too,"—
Says he on the summit of the mountains.
Lo! he is coming down the mountain path,
Walking towards the valley shrouded by the thick storms.
"Rain or hail, come what may!
What they can endure I can also!")

(On May 8, 19211(sic), the 64th birthday of Indian poet Tagore, friends of Peiping's Crescent Moon Society held e celebration in his honor. I wrote this poem on e scroll end he requested me to translate it into English. I did tho best I could as above.)

Asian Ideas of East and West: Tagore and His Critics in Japan, China, and India.
  • Series: Harvard East Asian Series, (Book 40)
  • Hardcover: 501 pages
  • Publisher: Harvard University Press; First Edition edition (July 1, 1974)
Tagore's Trip to China in 1924 前的訪談。

IN MEMORIAM
Stephen Northrup Hay
Professor of History, Emeritus
Santa Barbara
1925—2002

Stephen had an extraordinarily wide-ranging mind. Primarily a scholar of South Asia, he combined his deep interests in history, science, psychology, archeology, natural science, philosophy, and religion to produce a number of books and many articles in the field. Among his books are Sources of the Indian Tradition, Southeast Asian History: A Bibliographic Guide: Dialogue Between a Theist and an Idolater (Brahma-puttalik sanavad), and Asian Ideas of East and West: Tagore and His Critics in Japan, China, and India. At his death, he had completed one book on science, religion, and prayer and another on the youth of the man he most admired, Mohandas K. (Mahatma) Gandhi.

Stephen's interests ranged far beyond his specialty; he had a superb grasp of European and American cultural history as well and spoke German fluently. Always original, always unconventional, he created a logical, mathematical set of musical notation. His originality was nurtured at Deep Springs College, a small, isolated liberal arts college, and then at Haverford. From 1944 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army, and afterwards he traveled extensively in Europe, the Middle East, and India. Always determined to meet and converse with great thinkers, Stephen had dialogues with Carl Jung, Martin Buber, and Sri Aurobindo; sadly for Stephen, and of course for the entire world, Mahatma Gandhi died before Stephen could meet him.

Stephen took his B.A. from Swarthmore and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard; he taught at the University of Chicago and Harvard before coming to UCSB in 1966; he retired in 1990. He was a Fellow of the Asia Society and a Fulbright Fellow; he won the Watmull prize and the Commonwealth Club of California Silver Medal for Literature. Stephen and his wife Eloise, Professor of English, were known for their deep conversations on matters of philosophy and religion, and Stephen, a man of eclectic faith, endowed the study of Islam in the History Department and the study of prayer in the Religious Studies Department. The History Department has created a Stephen Hay Fellowship for graduate students. No one could know Stephen without deeply profiting from his deep spirituality and his original thought.

Did you know that Bob Dylan wasn't the first songwriter to win the Nobel? Calcutta-born poet Rabindranath Tagore was awarded the prize in 1913:
"Tagore was a true multi-disciplinarian. He was a performer, essayist, artist, poet, as well as a lover of music and a fine, prolific writer of songs. He wrote in both Bengali and English and translated his own work. The title of his most famous creation, a collection of 103 lyric poems published in 1912, is Gitanjali:
Song Offerings. Tagore had translated the work on his sick bed in Bengal, feeling too ill to work on new material. As the title suggests, much of the material contained therein are songs, albeit songs that Tagore converted into compositions that are meant to work as poetry without music. This collection — a small slice of his oeuvre, which includes 60 books of verse — almost certainly secured Tagore the prize. It throws into question the claim that Dylan is the first songwriter to win the Nobel in Literature. If this really was a collection of songs, then that’s it — Tagore had Dylan beat by over a century. And yet."
